What size hitch for a U-Haul 6x12 trailer?

Quick answer: U-Haul lists its 6x12 cargo trailer at 1,920 lbs empty with a 2,480 lb max load, or 4,400 lbs loaded, and fits it with a surge brake. That is past CURT's 3,500 lb Class 2 rating and inside Class 3, rated to 8,000 lbs. U-Haul wants a tow vehicle weighing at least 80% of the loaded trailer.

U-Haul's vehicle weight rule

U-Haul's trailer user instructions say your vehicle can tow a trailer without brakes if the loaded trailer doesn't exceed the vehicle's curb (empty) weight, and a braked trailer if the vehicle's curb weight is at least 80% of the loaded trailer. For this trailer that means at least 80% of the loaded trailer weight (braked trailer). CURT puts tongue weight at about 10 to 15% of gross trailer weight; see the tongue weight guide.
