How much tongue weight is safe?

10–15% of loaded trailer weight, 12% as the bullseye. Below 10% the trailer sways; above 15% the truck squats and steers badly.

Safe tongue weight = 10–15% of loaded trailer weight. Target 12%. The band exists because both failure modes are dangerous — it's not a "bigger is safer" spec.

Why the band — what each side does

Under 10% — sway. The trailer's center of gravity moves behind the hitch pivot and the rig becomes a pendulum. It starts as a shimmer at 55 mph, grows with passing trucks and crosswinds, and ends in a jackknife. The emergency response is counterintuitive: don't brake the truck — apply the manual trailer-brake slider gently to straighten, then pull over and shift cargo forward.

Over 15% — squat and lost steering. The rear axle compresses, the front tires unweight, and steering goes light exactly when you need it. Headlights pitch into oncoming traffic, the rear tires run overloaded, and every bump unloads the front axle further. Fix by shifting cargo rearward or adjusting the WDH bars.

Three ways to measure it

Measure loaded. An empty-trailer tongue weight is a number about a trailer you're not towing.

Tongue weight vs the rest of the rig

The band isn't the whole constraint — tongue weight is also payload, pound for pound, plus 75–120 lb of WDH hardware. A 700 lb tongue against a 1,500 lb payload rating leaves under 600 lb for passengers and gear, which two adults and a dog can eat. Moving the number: cargo placement and hardware

Tongue weight is set by where mass sits, not how much there is. Weight at the front of the trailer adds to the tongue roughly 1.5–2× its own value (lever arm), weight behind the axles subtracts from it. That's why the loaded-check matters more than the spec sheet: two identical trailers, one with the cooler in the galley and one with it on the rear bumper, can sit 150 lb apart on the tongue. Practical order of operations: heavy items over or slightly ahead of the axles, mid-weight toward the front, nothing meaningful behind the rear axle unless the tongue reads high.

Hardware moves the number too. Sliding the ball rearward on an adjustable mount increases effective tongue weight (longer lever from the trailer's axle group), and moving it forward decreases it — the cheapest fine-tune there is, worth a couple dozen pounds per inch. WDH spring bars add static load at the coupler as they're tensioned; more bar tension raises the measured coupler weight slightly while redistributing the real load forward. When your measured number sits just below the band, exhaust the cheap levers — ball position, bar tension, one heavy item moved forward — before rewriting the packing list.

FAQ

Is 12% tongue weight enough for a travel trailer?

12% is the bullseye, not the minimum — travel trailers commonly run 11–13% loaded. What matters is being inside the band with the trailer loaded for travel, since moving water tanks and gear shifts the number far more than most owners expect.

Does a weight distribution hitch change tongue weight?

It doesn't change the physics — the same weight presses on the ball — but it redistributes the effect across all four axles, restoring front-axle grip. On a scale, WDH transfer makes the simple two-pass subtraction misleading, which is why the steer-axle comparison matters more than the coupler number once bars are installed.

Why does my trailer sway at exactly highway speed?

Classic low-tongue-weight signature: under 10%, the pendulum mode needs speed to grow, so it appears only at 55+ mph. Measure the tongue weight loaded, shift cargo forward to reach the 10–15% band, and verify the sway disappears — if it doesn't, the load distribution or the bars are the next suspects.
